The story begins in in depression era England. A married man leaves his shrewish wife, taking their ten year old son with him, never to return. I used to read Catherine Cookson books years ago and only got this for my Kindle because it was a Daily Deal. So glad I did - I really enjoyed the story, it had me smiling and even crying. So well written and easy to read and the characters come to life.
